2020 Election: South Dakota approves sports betting
Gambling In Deadwood South Dakota
November 7, 2020
Voters in South Dakota last Tuesday approved a ballot measure to legalize sports betting. The vote was 57% to 43% in favor of the measure.
South Dakota's Gaming Commission will now take steps to develop the rules and regulations, and the state legislature will finalize the governing legislation. Online betting is expected to be added in the final legislation. Sports betting will go live on July 1, 2021.
All 25 casinos in Deadwood will be eligible to host a sportsbook. The 11 Native American casinos in South Dakota will also have the same sports betting opportunity as Deadwood due to provisions in the Federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

South Dakota will Vote on Sports Betting
October 9, 2020
South Dakotans will decide whether to approve sports betting in the Nov. 3 election. Another ballot measure on whether to legalize marijuana is also on the ballot. Both are expected to draw a strong turnout, and both measures add new tax revenues to the state budget if passed.
If sport betting is approved, sportsbooks will be legal in all Deadwood casinos and in all 12 South Dakota tribal casinos.
Earlier attempts to get sports wagering on the ballot were unsuccessful. This year the State Senate passed SJR 501 to legalize it subject to voter approval. The State House subsequently passed it by one vote, allowing the measure to proceed to the Nov. 3 ballot.
